I grew up a sports fan in Chicago, so I wanted to profile Derrick Rose.
Rose is a 5 of Diamonds/Jack of Clubs with a 2 of Clubs Decanate Ruling Card.
Rose’s career was off to a great start until he faced a string of Injuries. He became the youngest MVP in NBA history on May 4th, 2011. This was a Venus year for him and he had two King of Hearts as his Yearly Card, helping to bring mastery or success at home or in business relations. Venus is exalted in Jupiter, so there is a part of this period that can benefit the home and business. He also had an 8 of Spades/10 of Hearts as his Yearly Venus Card, giving him rewards for work ( 8 of Spades) which would put him in the spot light (10 of Hearts).
He was also in his yearly Jupiter period playing a double Queen, the Queen of Spades (work) and Queen of Clubs (mind), showing that he had some level of personal or internal mastery benefiting him for his work.
Health Karma
When you look at some of the cards, you can see that they have poor health Karma. For example, the 2 of Spades does with the 6 of Spades (health karma) as its first Karma card. The 4 of Hearts has the 6 of Spades in their lifetime Saturn position with a 9 of Spades underlying that card (a lethal combination). The 7 of Clubs has the 7 of Spades (the accident card) in its lifetime Saturn. So I was surprised when Rose popped up as a 5 of Diamonds.
Nonetheless, on April 30, 2012, Rose tore his ACL. It was a devastating injury. What is really interesting about this is that Rose was technically in his Jupiter yearly period when this occurred, but a few hours later he entered his Saturn part of the year where he was playing an Ace of Spades/3 of Hearts with a 7 of Spades/6 of Clubs. See the image below for his yearly lifespread at that time.
The Ace of Spades in Saturn brings illness or trouble, and it does bring a sense of death and re-birth. Saturn is our teacher, it is our karma. What may have been even more difficult for him was that he had a 7 of Spades in his Ruling spread. The 7 of Spades is the accident card of the deck, and it helps us pivot and adjust the way we are living our lives. Sometimes it does this by bringing on an injury or accident to help us slow down.
Despite having this ACL injury, Rose’s cards for his Pluto/Result periods looked like they would bring a successful ending to his year and he could overcome this.
He eventually made his way back for less than a month before tearing his medial meniscus in his right knee on November 22nd, 2013.
A couple things to note about the time period for this injury. First, he was displacing the 4 of Hearts. When we displace a card, we are renting from them for this year, and we owe them in a way. I just mentioned how the 4 of Hearts has bad health Karma, the deadly combination of the 6 of Spades in Saturn with the 9 of Spades underlying it (see below).
He was also displacing the 9 of Spades in his Planetary Ruling Card Spread. The 9 of Spades displacement would bring up the end of a major cycle for someone, or it would create a completion of a certain lifestyle. It is usually very hard, but in this position we need to learn to let go. Perhaps for Rose, he was learning to let go of a style of play that he always knew which opened the door for him to play in a way that eventually helped him sustain his career longer.
Lastly, he also had a Pluto/Result combination of the 7 of Diamonds/7 of Spades. 7s in such important areas of his life would show a need for attitude adjustments, and changing what we value and are attached to, which would result in a change of lifestyle or living. This could have also made him very spiritual in this quest.
Again he came back and played before tearing his same medial meniscus on February 24th, 2015.
What I find most fascinating about the timing of this injury, is it was basically his last major injury of his career and it occurred near the end of his 7 year cycle where he had a 7 of Spades Long Range Card (see below).
That 7 of Spades Long Range Card was a main focus for him from 2009-2016 and I think you can see why. It means that this energy was with him the entire time, and it would be one of his goals during this period - to overcome any attachments and negative attitudes to help bring him a higher purpose or spiritual lifestyle.
I also circled the 8 of Hearts displacement card because it has the 7 of Spades as its 1st Karma Card. So in a way he had a double influence of the accident card for 7 years. One in his Long Range and one as his Karma.
Derrick Rose is still playing today! Although his role has been downsized in the past few years, he has found a way to remain healthy (by his standards) and continue to just enjoy playing the game he loves.
